Assembling IKEA, flatpack, or ready-to-assemble furniture can be a very calming, productive, and even profitable activity – if you follow the right steps, that is!

The hunt for new furniture can be exciting. Walking around the maze of Ikea searching for that perfect desk, or browsing on walmart.com to get a cheap deal on a new bookshelf are perfect ways to add some pizazz to your apartment or house. While shopping for furniture can be fun, once the realization of “oh, I actually have to build this stuff!” hits, the excitement begins to wear off…but it’s not so bad! Assembling IKEA, flatpack, or ready-to-assemble furniture can be a very calming, productive, and even profitable activity – if you follow the right steps, that is!

Step 1: Find an open space. The most important step when beginning to build your furniture is to have a nice spacious area to work. If you’re building a bookshelf in an already cramped office, you’re going to have a bad time. Free up some space somewhere in your home to have a clear space and a clear mind to begin building.

Step 2: Organize and sort the large contents of the box. Take out the contents of the box and organize them according to their shapes and sizes. Typically, there will be a lot of pieces that are copied – for instance, the shelves in a bookshelf. Group all of the similar pieces together.

Step 3: Organize and sort the small contents of the box. Now that the larger pieces have been sorted out, now it’s time to get to those pesky screws and bolts that will hold your beautiful furniture together. Remove all the small pieces and again, group them together. This might seem like an unnecessary thing, but trust us – it makes the rest of the process much, much, easier. Do you really want to spend 5 minutes searching for that one tiny screw, only to realize it’s underneath the building instructions?

Step 4: skim through the instructions. That brings us to our next point – skim through the instructions. You don’t have to analyze it like it’s a calculus textbook (although it might seem that way) but flip through the pages to get a general sense of how the furniture will progress when being built. This will give you a better mindset about where you are in the building process as you continue through it.

(Optional) Step 4.5: Put on some music. For those of us who want to get their groove on while building, check out our exclusive NearJobs Furniture Assembling Playlist. It’s filled with some great tunes that will surely take your furniture building experience to the next level.

Step 5: Begin assembling the furniture. Now that you’re all prepped and ready, it’s time to begin building the furniture itself. Don’t be scared! Just think about how well prepared you are now; so take a deep breath, and begin with the first step…then the second…and the third…well, you get the idea.

Step 6: Keep track of where you’re at, and take it one step at a time. Patience is key. Take the process slowly but surely (think of the tortoise and the hair…) and you’ll get to the finish line before you know it. The more you try to rush the process, the more problems you’ll run into.

Step 7: It’s over before you know it – feel proud! Whew! All done! See, was it really so bad? By taking your time and really structuring the furniture building process in an efficient and productive way, suddenly the endeavor feels less like a chore and much more like a fulfilling activity. Now, put the furniture up in your home and bask in the glory of your hard work – you deserve it!
